First Eco-Friendly Community in Fort Lauderdale
Satori recently became Fort Lauderdale's first eco-friendly luxury apartment community.
Fort Lauderdale, Fla.—Satori, a luxury community in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., recently became the city’s first eco-friendly luxury apartment community. Additionally, the community transformed an undesirable address to a thriving luxury community. And because of this, The Altman Companies, Satori’s developer, was recently honored with a 2012 Community Appearance Award and a Midrise Residence of the Year designation for their achievement.
Satori, a 279-unit community, was designed to be environmentally friendly. The roof is designed with a Flex Light Photovoltaic Solar Energy System to offset energy costs. The apartments include sustainable bamboo flooring, carpeting made from recyclable materials and pain that emanate zero emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Energy Star appliances are also used.
Additional green elements in the Satori community include a pool purification system that requires no chlorine, and programmable thermostats that allow residents to control their energy consumption.
It was important to the developer that Satori was as environmentally conscious as possible.
“We are committed to reduce the carbon footprint of our buildings and to provide healthy homes for our residents,” Manny Martinez, vice president, Altman Development Corp., tells MHN. “Satori’s use of solar panels to produce energy, and the use of recycled construction materials reflect our commitment to reduce environmental pollution. Using low VOC paints, Merv 8 A/C filters and a no chlorine pool system are healthy enhancements important to our customers.”
Of course, it was crucial for the community to be aesthetically appealing as well as environmentally sound. The façade was designed with a Florida vernacular style. Royal Palms and Cathedral Live Oaks were used to line the streets around the community. In total, there are over 200 different species of medium-sized trees, palms, shrubs, accents, etc., showcased on the Satori property.
“Satori is an architecturally rich community,” Martinez says. “[It] is not only a visual enhancement to the neighborhood, but is a truly green, echo-friendly village that combines luxury and style in a very attractive urban setting.”
