U-Haul Expands Atlanta Footprint

The 700-unit self storage facility is set for delivery by the end of 2025.

U-Haul has acquired a 1.8-acre site in Lawrenceville, Ga., for $489,000, Gwinnett County records show, where it will develop its first first retail and self storage facility in the city.

U-Haul Storage at Buford Drive will feature a total of 88,498 square feet. The project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2025.

Plans call for a three-story building that will encompass 700 indoor-accessible self storage rooms with climate-controlled options. Amenities will include security systems such as video surveillance and electronic access and after-hours access. U-Haul facilities usually feature units ranging between 25 and 300 square feet.

The property will take shape at 243 Buford Drive, near the intersection of U.S. Routes 124 and 29 and some 33 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta. It will be less than 2 miles from the Gwinnett County Airport.

The facility will be one of the eight available on a 3-mile radius, offering residents 6.7 rentable square feet per capita, Yardi Matrix data shows. As of February, urban and suburban Atlanta had a total of 28 self storage properties under construction, set to add 2.1 million rentable square feet to the existing inventory, according to the same source. U-Haul’s self storage footprint in the market represents approximately 3 million square feet, the same research shows.

This month, the company announced the development of an 80,000-square-foot property in Rapid City, S.D., scheduled for completion in early 2025. U-Haul is also planning to deliver other two storage properties by the end of 2026. The facilities will take shape in Payson, Ariz., and San Antonio.
