Matt Birenbaum Joins AvalonBay as Executive Vice President of Corporate Strategy
AvalonBay Communities Inc., a real estate investment trust, announced that Matthew Birenbaum has joined the company as executive vice president for corporate strategy.
Arlington, Va.—AvalonBay Communities Inc., a real estate investment trust, announced that Matthew Birenbaum has joined the company as executive vice president for corporate strategy. Birenbaum will report to Timothy J. Naughton, current president and incoming CEO.
Birenbaum will serve on both the Executive Committee and Management Investment Committee. In addition, he will have oversight responsibility for the brand strategy and design functions within the company.
Birenbaum comes to AvalonBay from Abbey Road Property Group, a Northern Virginia-based real estate development and investment firm that he founded in 2006. Prior to Abbey Road, he served as Senior Vice President of EYA, a developer of for-sale residential communities in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. From 1996 to 2003, Birenbaum was Regional Vice President for Development at AvalonBay with responsibility for several geographies. At AvalonBay, he led the development of a number of major projects, including Avalon at Arlington Square (Va.), Avalon at Cameron Court (Va.), Avalon at Gallery Place (D.C.), Avalon at Grosvenor Station (Md.), and Avalon at Rock Spring (Md.). His career in the industry also includes earlier work at Tishman Speyer Properties.
