CK Designworks is designing what they call a “vertical street” in the Melbourne city center. Crystal Gardens, a 35-story mixed-use high-rise, will feature ground-floor retail, three floors of office space and 154 apartment units. Four community gardens will be incorporated into the design, spaced out by six floors from each other.
Several green elements will make the building energy efficient, such as heat-reflective glass, solar-powered lighting, and rainwater collection that will be contributed to watering the gardens and flushing toilets. Energy-efficient design will also be used put into appliances and heating and cooling.
Each apartment gets a balcony, and architects are planning to construct lighting that will make the building light up in the middle of downtown at night.
