Couples who rent together sometimes break up. How do you deal with this situation?

A recent article in The New York Times reported on couples who move in together after dating for a little bit, and end up breaking up but being stuck in an apartment together until the end of the lease. Of course, this leaves the former couple miserable. And, according to the article, this could even lead to one person moving out, leaving the other person in the lurch in terms of rent.

Property managers should come up with a contingency plan for this situation, especially because it’s a reoccurring event. That way they can make sure that they’re not stuck with a renter who now can no longer afford to pay the rent. And, with the right planning, a property manager might even be about to benefit from a couple breaking up.
