Vitus Group Acquires San Diego Affordable Housing Community

San Diego—The Vitus Group announced that it has acquired Meadowbrook Apartments in San Diego and has plans to perform a $17 million renovation on the affordable housing community.

Renovations to the 448-unit community will include new roofs and windows and the addition of engery-saving appliances and water-conserving plumbing and fixtures, while individual units will receive new kitchens and bathrooms. Additionally, Vitus intends to install solar photovoltaic equipment that will produce about 95 percent of the electricity for the community’s common areas, such as the leasing center and the auditorium, which is used for community functions and events. The kitchen in the building that houses the leasing center and auditorium will receive a complete remodel.

“This project will be a significant improvement for the residents of the Meadowbrook community,” says David Beacham, director at Vitus Group. “It’s not often we as developers get the chance to transform and improve an entire neighborhood.”

Other renovations will include general upgrades to two existing community buildings, as well as the installation of a computer lab and two separate classrooms in the second of those two buildings, which was originally used as a preschool. Those new facilities will be utilized for a variety of social service programs, which will be overseen by Project Access, a nonprofit organization that specializes in providing access to health, education and employment services for low-income communities in California. The community will be managed by US Residential.

Meadowbrook Apartments, which is located about eight miles east of downtown San Diego, is Vitus’ only San Diego County property, though it has five in neighboring Imperial County. The company has 19 affordable housing developments in California and more than 80 across the United States.
