Atlanta—NorSouth Development, an Atlanta-based real estate company that focuses on environmentally sound seniors communities, has recently received EarthCraft Multifamily certification for two of its affordable communities. This certification is the Southeast’s standard green building certification program for multifamily projects. Communities that qualify for this certification must meet a number of criteria including indoor air quality, energy and water efficiency, resource-efficient design and building materials, waste management and site planning.
The NorSouth Development communities that received the EarthCraft Multifamily certification were HearthSide Towne Lake and HearthSide Brookleigh, both affordable communities for seniors. Hearthside Towne Lake, which is located in Woodstock, Ga., is a $15.2 million community. It is part of the Madison Pointe mixed-use property developed by Madison Retail LLC. The retail section of this development includes an orthopedic center and a Walgreens.
HearthSide Brookleigh is a new development that is already 65 percent leased. It is a $15.7 million senior community. Phase III of this community includes 121 apartments, as well as a mixed-use development. Its green features have also been recognized by the Georgia Urban Forest Council, which awarded it its 2010 Outstanding Streetscape Revitalization Award.
“Receiving the EarthCraft Multifamily certification is an important accomplishment for our team,” Brendan Barr, vice president of NorSouth Development, said in a press statement. “This recognition advances our goal of creating livable, healthy communities that benefit our residents and surrounding neighborhoods, while minimally impacting the land and natural resources. Over time, the benefits continue for our residents through reduced energy bills, conservation of natural resources and healthier lifestyles.”
