Top 10 Tallest Apartment Buildings in Chicago

A new study from apartment search website RENTCafé shows that, nationwide, we are building more high- and mid-rise apartment buildings than low-rises. Chicago is following this trend.

A new study from apartment search website RENTCafé shows that, nationwide, we are building more high- and mid-rise apartment buildings than low-rises. The share of low-rises communities decreased from 92 percent in the ‘90s to 48 percent of the buildings currently being currently constructed, while that of high-rises went from only 2 percent in the ‘90s to 11 percent in three decades.

Chicago is following the national trend, with 41 percent high rises and 39 percent mid rises being built this decade. It’s only surpassed by Boston and New York in terms of the percentage of high-rise buildings being delivered between 2010 and 2018. Boasting one of the tallest skylines in the world, Chicago also has many tall multifamily communities. Here are the top 10:

Aqua at Lakeshore East

The Aqua at Lakeshore East residential building is not only the tallest completed apartment building in Chicago, but also in the entire country. The structure was built in 2009 and includes 87 floors and 474 units. The Chicago apartments you can rent here come with a wide range of luxury amenities such as balconies with panoramic views or floor-to-ceiling windows.

One Eleven

The 10^th tallest U.S. residential building is also in Chicago, One Eleven was built in 2014 and has 58 floors and 504 units. It’s located downtown, close to major landmarks such as Millennium Park, The Magnificent Mile and the Chicago River.

Grand Plaza

The third tallest in Chicago, Grand Plaza on Grand Ave and State Street is 56 floors tall and houses 481 luxury units. The community also offers a library, heated pool and saunas. It has access to Navy Pier, the United Center and the Loop.

Atwater

Built in 2009, this apartment building on East Ohio Street has 53 floors and a total of 480 units. It’s located close to the beach in Milton Lee Olive Park and offers amenities such as outdoor pools and fitness centers.

Optima Signature

A LEED Silver® Certified building, Optima Signature was developed in 2018 and features 490 units throughout its 52 floors. It also has 1.5 acres of amenity space, including heated pools, cabanas and bars.

The Tides at Lakeshore East

Located near the shores of Lake Michigan, The Tides at Lakeshore East includes 51 floors and 608 units. It was built in 2008 and features luxury amenities.

AMLI River North

The 50-story AMLI River North building features 409 apartments with views, a fitness center and a yoga studio. The community was built in 2014, it includes rooftop access.

North Water

With 50 floors and 398 units, North Water is one of the tallest additions to Chicago’s skyline since 2015.

One Superior Place

One Superior Place, which has 908 units, has 50 floors and was built back in 2002. The is close River North and Gold Coast, and it has many amenities.
