Suffolk Construction Selected as Contractor for Boston’s Latest Smoke-Free Building

Boston—More and more buildings are being touted as smoke-free. Good news for our lungs, and for apartment resale values. In Boston, the latest property that is being built smoke-free is The Kensington.
Kensington Investment Co., a Boston-based real estate development home, and National Development, a New England development and investment firm, awarded Suffolk Construction, a privately held building contractor based in Boston, the construction contract for the 27-story mixed-use building.
The Kensington is being built with green in mind.
“We want this building to represent the future of Boston design and sustainability,” Edward Lewis, senior vice president, Kensington Investment Company, tells MHN. “Complementing the mayor’s [Thomas M. Menino’s] smoke-free initiative, The Kensington will be smoke-free and designed to a LEED Gold standard.”
In addition to the environmentally friendly features, The Kensington will have 381 luxury apartments, 2,300 square feet of retail space and 110 parking spaces. Amenities will include a pool, fitness center and tech-friendly common areas.
More good news: The Kensington will create 400 new jobs and bring residential units to Boston’s Theater District.
Construction for the community is scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2013.
