Bega, New South Wales, Australia–The new $187 million hospital in the Bega Valley Shire has topped out recently. Site work commenced earlier this year. Brookfield Multiplex is in charge of construction; the contractor was called upon to carry out the project this year in February.
The new South East Regional Hospital will be an integrated health campus offering extensive community and ambulatory services including community mental health, drug and alcohol services along with in-patient services. According to the plans, it will accommodate needs of the broader Bega Valley community through to 2021 and beyond.
The hospital’s state-of-the-art emergency department will include an emergency medical unit, capacity for fast track care and acute emergency bays. A combined Integrated Critical Care Unit will also be available for high dependency and cardiac inpatients in need of intensive care. Regional orthopedic services and expanded surgical services including three operating theatres and a procedure room are underway along with new and expanded acute medical and surgical areas. Additionally, an inpatient sub-acute care unit will focus on rehabilitation and palliative care services. The hospital will also include maternity and pediatrics services. A mental health unit with 20 beds will provide care across the acute and sub-acute spectrum. Furthermore, the facility will offer a range of clinical support services—medical imaging, pharmacy and pathology—as well as non-clinical support services. The latter include food services, cleaning and linen services, admissions and business support services. Space for the provision of education and training will also be made available. Plans include parking for 500 cars a helipad space.
Located on 43.24 acres of land on Tathra Road, the new South East Regional Hospital is so far the biggest infrastructure project to be undertaken in the Bega Valley Shire. To reach the current stage of construction, 38,846 tons (14,644 cubic meters) of concrete and 1,051 tons of reinforcement have been put in place. The construction is scheduled to be completed in 2016.
Brookfield Multiplex has several other health projects in its portfolio in New South Wales, including the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse and the Clinical Services Building at the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney. The company has also completed work on Macquarie Group’s new global headquarters at 50 Martin Place in Sydney’s central business district just a few weeks ago.
