Rentyl Apartments & Homes' Ellie Norton on which digital tools reduce friction, which merely add noise and why automation should never replace human service, with host Laura Valean.

Technology has become one of multifamily operators’ greatest allies, but do residents really want more of it? What they want are easier rent payments, faster answers, clearer maintenance updates and greater control over their experience.
Delivering that simplicity, however, is becoming increasingly complicated. With a constant stream of resident apps, automation tools and AI-powered features all promising to improve satisfaction and performance, how can multifamily operators determine which investments create meaningful value and which are simply adding more noise?
In this episode of Mission Success: Women in Multifamily, MHN Executive Editor Laura Valean speaks with Ellie Norton, president of Rentyl Apartments & Homes, about what residents actually expect from technology. Drawing on nearly three decades of experience across the owner-operator and supplier sides of the industry, Norton explains why adoption metrics alone reveal little about whether a platform is working.

“We’re focused on automating transactions, not the relationship,” she said. When something goes wrong, residents are no longer looking only for efficiency. They want empathy, accountability and confidence that someone cares enough to solve their problem.
The conversation also moves beyond technology to explore the experiences that have shaped Norton as a leader. She reflects on what working in sales taught her about gaining buy-in, how motherhood and special-needs advocacy changed the way she recognizes potential in others, and why she no longer thinks of work-life balance as an even division between competing priorities.
Toward the end of the discussion, Norton also provides a candid look at her evolution outside the office—from her Ironman years to becoming a yoga instructor—and shares the memorable story behind her escape from Alcatraz.
