Sekondi-Takoradi, Ghana—Marriott International is tapping the Ghana hospitality market for the first time ever. The international hospitality operator recently announced the opening of a new hotel under its Protea brand in the city of Sekondi-Takoradi. Expanding into Ghana in July 2016 means that Marriott will be present in 19 countries throughout the Middle East and Africa.

Protea Hotel Select Takoradi is located in Ghana’s fourth largest city. The 132-key facility will offer guests a restaurant, bar and lounge, a terrace, pool and entertainment area, as well as fitness facilities. The hotel will also offer conference facilities for parties of around 150 people, while the amenity package will also features Wi-Fi connectivity throughout the building.

The Protea Hotels brand has a consistent presence in the African continent, with over 100 facilities operated under its name. Choosing Sekondi-Takoradi is most likely the result of the city’s recent economic rise, on the back of the oil industry. Located on the main rail lines to the Ghanaian capital of Accra, the city is an important industrial center. The recent discovery of important sweet crude oil and crude oil reserves has improved the area’s economic profile during the past few years, generating a need of rooms in the area.
