Kensington Breaks Ground in Salt Lake City
Once completed, Astra Tower will be the tallest building in Utah.
Kensington Investment has broken ground on Astra Tower in downtown Salt Lake City. The high-rise multifamily property is expected to be Utah’s tallest building when completed in fall 2024.
The 372-unit Astra Tower, located at 200 S. State St., will offer studio, one-, and two-bedroom apartments, with two floors of penthouse units. According to Kensington’s website, amenities at the property will be spread out among three floors. The eighth floor will feature a terrace, a gourmet kitchen, a lounge featuring televisions and games, a fireplace, an outdoor deck with seating and grills, an urban park and a state-of-the-art fitness center and fitness studio.

The 22nd floor will have a pool terrace with a swimming pool, jacuzzi, spa with saunas, a plunge pool and treatment rooms. The 40th floor will be a residents-only rooftop terrace with a big-screen television, grill and group socialization areas.
The south and southeast façades will be clad with a floor-to-ceiling glass wall, with the rest of the property covered in a variation of glass fiber-reinforced concrete cladding with deeply recessed windows.
Astra Tower is slated to top out at 450 feet and 40 stories in September 2023, with completion of the interior and exterior expected in fall 2024. The property was designed by HKS, and Jacobsen Construction is serving as general contractor.
Astra Tower is situated at the intersection of South State Street and East 200 South on a 0.69-acre parcel of land the firm acquired in February 2018. The development site previously housed a restaurant and a large parking lot.
The high-rise provides residents with views of downtown, the Salt Lake Valley and the Wasatch Front. The Front is an 80-mile corridor that stretches from Brigham City to the Provo area, according to the Utah Office of Tourism.
The developer has committed to strict environmental standards for Astra Tower, incorporating high-end mechanical and HVAC systems and energy efficient windows and appliances to qualify the property for LEED Gold certification. The company has also integrated WELL Building concepts into the design to enhance the health and well-being of residents.
