Institute of Real Estate Management Installs 2013 Officers

Chicago—The Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM®), an international community of more than 17,000 real estate managers across all property types, installed its officers for 2013 during its just-concluded Fall Leadership Conference held in New Orleans. Elizabeth (Beth) Machen, CPM®, of Charlotte, N.C., is the new president; Joseph J. Greenblatt, CPM®, of San Diego, is the new president-elect; and Lori Burger, of Rohnert Park, Calif., is the new secretary/treasurer.

Machen is president of the Charlotte, N.C.-based Machen Advisory Group Inc., with responsibility for overseeing the firm’s portfolio of office, retail, mixed-use, showroom and industrial properties in the Carolinas.

Her expertise is far ranging and includes property takeovers, rehabs, stabilizing properties, analyzing property performance for prospective buyers, and serving on due diligence teams. She also specializes in disaster and emergency training, as well as serving as the LEED AP on several LEED projects.

Machen earned IREM’s CPM® designation in 1996, and has been active in the organization nationally and locally. A member of IREM’s Western North Carolina Chapter No. 40, she served as president in 1999, was honored as the chapter’s “CPM® of the Year” in 2000, and has been a member of its executive board since 2000. Nationally, she has served as a regional vice president and as a member of several committees.

She attended Columbia College and Valdosta State College and, in addition to her IREM membership, she is a member of Commercial Real Estate Executive Women (CREW). Long active in local community and civic groups, she is on the board of Concord, NC-based Journey Toward Sustainability, which educates 5th graders on sustainability through hands-on experience. As well, she serves on the Charlotte-based University City Partners Green Committee, which promotes sustainable initiatives in the University area.

Greenblatt is president of Sunrise Management, headquartered in San Diego, with responsibility for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the company, its portfolio of more than 11,000 resident units, and its 300 employees officed in San Diego and Sacramento, Calif.; Mesa, Ariz.; and Las Vegas. He has long been active in IREM’s San Diego Chapter No.18, and has served in numerous chapter leadership positions, including that of president. He was the chapter’s “CPM® Candidate of the Year” in 1991 and its “CPM® of the Year” in 1994.

Greenblatt also has been active in IREM at the national level. He is a member of IREM’s national faculty, has served as chairman of its national Ethics Hearing and Discipline Board, and as senior vice president with oversight for IREM’s educational programs and activities. As well, he is the recipient of two of IREM national service awards, the IREM “Key Award” in September 1993, and its “Past President’s Award “in 1996.

In addition to his IREM® membership, Greenblatt is a member of the board of directors of the Bobby Jo Lewis Foundation, a non-profit (501(c)3) organization, and a member of the National Apartment Association (NAA), and NAA’s San Diego Chapter. As well, he is a member of the San Diego County Apartment Association and the California Apartment Association, having previously served both groups as a board member.

Burger is a senior vice president and director of Eugene Burger Management Corporation (EBMC), headquartered in Rohnert Park, Calif., whose portfolio consists of more than 6,500 residential units, 20,000 association homes and 2 million square feet of commercial space.

Burger has managed the full spectrum of residential and commercial property types, and is responsible for assisting in the day-to-day operations of EBMC, a family owned and operated company with 450 employees located in California, Nevada, and other western states. She has led the way in managing “full envelope” reconstruction projects of aging community association communities and orchestrating numerous multi-million dollar renovation projects. As well, she has written and lectured extensively on a wide range of real estate management and related topics.

Burger earned her CPM® designation from IREM in 1984, and has been active in the organization at the local and national levels. She is a past president of IREM® chapters in Northern Nevada/Tahoe and San Francisco, and was honored as the chapters’ “CPM® of the Year” in 1988 and 1996. She received the Franklyn D. Loyns Award for Outstanding Career Service in 2001 and was inducted into IREM’s Academy of Authors in 2008. She has served IREM as a senior vice president and regional vice president and has been a member and chair of numerous national committees. Along with her CPM® designation, she has earned credentials from other professional real estate organizations at the state and national levels.
