Boston Senior Housing Development Obtains Funding
The Cheney Homes will feature 48 service-rich affordable apartments.
The Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Development Corp. has received a mix of public, private and grant financing for the development of Cheney Homes, a 48-unit affordable senior housing community in Boston.
The financing will be provided by the city of Boston, MassHousing, the Massachusetts Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities, Eastern Bank, the Massachusetts Housing Investment Corp. and federal and state Low-Income Housing Tax Credits.
MassHousing, Eastern Bank, the City of Boston and the Massachusetts Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities also funded the redevelopment of a former 131-key hotel into a 99-unit, age-restricted affordable senior housing community in Boston.
Located at 4-18 Cheney St., the site is within the Grove Hall neighborhood. The development is near Franklin Park and several MBTA bus routes.
A closer look at the service-rich affordable housing
Once completed, the community will serve individuals over the age of 55 earning between 30 and 60 percent of the area median income. A total of 36 units will receive support from federal and state project-based housing subsidies.
ICON Architecture will serve as the main architect, along with NEI General Contracting as general contractor and UHM Properties as the management agent. Uphams Corner Health Committee will provide supportive resident services, including a full-time coordinator and part-time nurse. Through an on-site Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly, Uphams Corner Health Center will provide a flexible environment tailored to different mobility needs. This initiative offers comprehensive services to support long-term well-being and community-based aging.
The four-story building will be developed following the demolition of an existing dilapidated structure. The Cheney Homes’ design will follow Passive House standards and will feature one- and two-bedroom affordable units. Common-area amenities are set to include a rooftop amenity space, a courtyard and a community room, among others.
