Bernards Starts Construction on $100M Ultra-Luxury Senior Housing

The Laguna Nigel, Calif., development has been designed to deliver a range of services rivaling that of a five-star hotel.

mhn-bernardsLos Angeles—Commercial builder Bernards has started construction on a Laguna Nigel, Calif., senior living development called Crestavilla. The $100 million ultra-luxury retirement community slated for completion in November 2017 has been designed to deliver a range of services rivaling that of a five-star hotel.

The 211,387-square-foot development set on 11.5 acres of lush, manicured grounds will feature 112 independent living and 72 assisted living units, as well as 36 memory care beds. Three levels of above-grade residential living and one below-grade parking level will comprise the development.

Laguna Nigel is about 55 miles southeast of Los Angeles.

“Bernards was selected for the Crestavilla project based on expertise with this project type, knowledge of the local construction market with strong trade contractor relationships, comprehensive preconstruction capabilities that enabled accurate project cost, construction planning and schedule development, and a highly capable construction team,” San Fernando, Calif.-based Bernards Vice President Sam Laham told MHN.

Crestavilla was designed by Santa Ana, Calif.-based William Hezmalhalch Architects.

It is being developed by Steadfast Senior Living, LLC of Irvine, Calif., one of the Steadfast Companies.

Among the distinctive challenges Bernards faced on the project was the discovery during excavation of fossils dating back six million years. “The Bernards team worked with the archeological monitor assigned to the Crestavilla project and other archeological experts to properly unearth and remove the fossils,” Laham said.

Bernards has extensive experience in the senior living sector, having built senior living projects for Sunrise Senior Living. Its luxury residential projects include Americana at Brand in Glendale, Calif. and Essex Property Trust’s Wilshire at La Brea. The company recently completed the new construction and historic renovation of the five-star El Encanto Hotel and Garden Villas, the oldest hotel in Santa Barbara, Calif.

“We are extremely pleased that Steadfast Companies has selected Bernards to manage this unique project,” Laham said.

“Our team will leverage its combined knowledge of building ultra-luxury multifamily resort hotels and senior living projects and deliver a top-quality product that future residents can enjoy for many years to come.”
