Montgomery County, Md.—Washington Property Co. (WPC) has broken ground on Solaire Bethesda, a 139-unit apartment community that will also feature 6,400 square feet of ground-floor retail space and a two-level underground parking garage. The development is slated for completion in 2016.
Located at the corner of Wisconsin and Woodmont on the site of the former Eastham’s Exxon Servicenter, Solaire Bethesda will be about 800 feet from the planned southern entrance to the Bethesda Metro station and Purple Line light rail station. The Red Line provides access to downtown Washington and Union Station, while the Purple Line will provide east-west connections to Chevy Chase, Silver Spring, the University of Maryland-College Park, New Carrollton and other destinations.
Amenities include a residents’ lounge with billiards, bar, fireplace, and games; a clubroom; cyber café; fitness center; and outdoor terraces designed for a variety of activities. Individual apartments, including the project’s 21 MPDUs (moderately priced dwelling units), will sport nine-foot ceilings, large windows, and walk-in closets. The entire development will be built to LEED Silver criteria.
WPC bought the 25,000-square-foot site at 7100 Wisconsin Ave. in July 2011. The $60 million development is being financed with a $42 million construction loan from RBS Citizens Bank.
The company is no stranger to the area. Solaire Bethesda will be WPC’s third Solaire-branded apartment property, following the 2012 opening of Solaire Silver Spring and the early 2014 opening of Solaire Wheaton. These properties, which total nearly 700 units, are all near Metrorail’s Red Line.
