Richmond, Calif.—Vitus Group announced that it has acquired the St. John’s Apartments, a 158-unit affordable housing community in Richmond, Calif. The company plans to spend $8 million on renovations to modernize the community.

St. John’s Apartments includes one-, two- and three-bedroom units and is a garden-style community.

“The two-level, townhouse design of these garden-style apartments is very unique, as is the size of the site, comprising eight acres,” Sara Fay, director at Vitus, tells MHN. “The style and size of the St. John’s Apartments mean it is very desirable for families, and a number of children are currently living there.”

Vitus, which acquired the community from the John Steward Company, plans on updating both the interiors and exteriors of St. John’s Apartments. The amenities will also be renovated, including an expanded community room that will include computer stations, a media room and meeting space. Landscaping and garden areas will also be added.

“There are several large components to the renovation at St. John’s Apartments,” Fay says. “The largest exterior component is the replacement of the entire plumbing system and replacement of all the building’s siding; the biggest interior renovation is the installation of vinyl plank wood flooring in the family living areas and replacement of all interior cabinets, countertops and fixtures.”

Renovations at St. John’s Apartments are expected to be complete in the spring of 2014.
