Sacramento Affordable Housing Community Receives Grant for Green Upgrades
Mutual Housing California has been awarded a $5,000 grant from the Bank of Sacramento in order to make green renovations at Greenway Village Mutual Housing Community, a 54-unit affordable housing community located in South Sacramento, Calif.

Sacramento, Calif.—Mutual Housing California has been awarded a $5,000 grant from the Bank of Sacramento in order to make green renovations at Greenway Village Mutual Housing Community, a 54-unit affordable housing community located in South Sacramento, Calif.
“We have an ongoing collaboration with St. John’s to help homeless women and children become permanent residents of Greenway,” says Rachel Iskow, Mutual Housing California CEO. “Maintaining this crucial resource for them is of utmost importance to us.”
The community is comprised of 16, two-story buildings and serves families making below 50 and 60 percent of the area median income, including families from the St. John’s Shelter Program and Women and Children.
Planned green improvements at the community include the installation of solar thermal panels, which will help reduce community operating costs and resident utility costs. Other plans include the installation of a new storm drain, the replacement of exteriors with sustainable and durable siding, the replacement of all roofs and windows. The current HVAC system will also be replaced with an energy efficient, forced-air split-system model. Interior improvements will include upgrades to energy efficient appliances as well as new cabinets, countertops, bathroom and kitchen fixtures, bath tubs and surrounds, floor and window coverings that will be constructed from healthier, green materials.
Renovations, which are expected to begin soon, will take about a year and residents will be temporarily relocated during that time.

Greenway Village was acquired and renovated by Mutual Housing California in 1994. The community offers one-, two-, three- and five-bedroom floor plans and can house up to 160 people. Amenities at the property include a community room, basketball courts, a playground and a community organizer.
Mutual California Housing, a non-profit, was founded in 1988 and develops and operates rental housing primarily in Sacramento and other Northern California communities. The company owns and operates more than 1,000 residences across 18 communities and currently serves nearly 3,000 residents.
