Meet One Essex Crossing: 2020 MHN Excellence Gold Winner for ‘Unbuilt Development & Design’

A slideshow of the award-winning entry by CetraRuddy Architecture and Delancey Street Associates.

One Essex Crossing will sprout up 14 stories within the 1.7 million-square-foot Essex Crossing mixed-use development on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. The 83-unit building will be a modern reflection of the historic tenement-style architecture that surrounds it, with a facade of custom panels, an opaque wall assembly of brick masonry veneer, a wavy metal spandrel and terracotta pilasters.

Designing the 318,000-square-foot property on a site that had mostly sat vacant since 1967 comes with its challenges, but CetraRuddy created an eye-pleasing plan for a mixed-use tower. The complex will also feature office space, retail shops, a mezzanine-level public garden and The Market Line, a 150,000-square-foot below-grade marketplace that, once completed in 2021, will be the largest marketplace in New York City and one of the largest in the world.
