New York—East 37th Street Residential Tower in Manhattan has won the Tall Buildings category in the Architectural Review MIPIM Future Project Awards 2015. The structure is envisioned as a new type of development specifically tailored to the increasingly dense New York City urban context, according to the designer, Perkins+Will. As such, the project rises as a slender tower, and is draped in a shimmering angled curtain.
The planned East 37th Street Residential Tower will be comprised entirely of residential condominium units, and stands 65 stories tall. The developer is Nef, a Turkish real estate company.
The building is unlike conventional NYC developments where park and amenity spaces are clustered at either the bottom, top, or midway through the structure, or small balconies are added to the exterior. Instead, the designer consolidated these spaces in equally spaced clusters throughout the development to create five distinct but interconnected social blocks to foster a vertical urban community. The project integrates the elements of a diverse urban landscape and various mixtures of city life, all within essential park/green space.
Now in their 13th year, the MIPIM Architectural Review Future Project Awards focus on future projects, recognizing excellence in unbuilt or incomplete projects spanning several categories. With an emphasis on creativity, the awards showcase projects that are examples of fine architecture, but which also have responded to the client’s development brief, and considered the way in which they will impact to the community around them.
This year’s international jury included Christina Seilern, founder, Studio Seilern Architects; Peter Stewart, architect and principal, Peter Stewart Consultancy; Sutherland Lyall, an architectural journalist; and Roger Zogolovitch, creative director, Solidspace. Paul Finch, programme director, World Architecture Festival, chaired the jury. The MIPIM Awards organizers received more than 2,400 submissions from 22 countries, and 155 projects receive one kind or honor or another.
