New York—Related Cos. has unveiled four works by painter Derek Reist at 1214 Fifth Ave., its 53-story rental tower in Carnegie Hill, on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The works, which the artist recently completed, will be on permanent display in the building’s lobby, itself recently completed.
The new work consists of a large diptych representing Central Park, which combines patterns of light, shade, deep perspective, and the parks’ foliage to evoke depth and movement. The representational paintings open the wall and draw the viewer into a verdant setting, while the abstract paintings feature hard edge geometric forms which float in a space that shifts between flat, shallow and deep, explains the Related Cos. in a press statement.
Reist is known for experimentation in light and shadow. His work can be found in numerous private collections and corporate collections as well, including the Milton Eisenhower Library at Johns Hopkins, General Mills, UBS, Pfizer and the International Peace Academy. According to the Related Cos., the lobby is a good location to showcase Derek’s works, offering natural light and two entry points that draw one’s attention to the paintings.
Related Cos. has placed art in its other properties, such as condo developments Astor Place and Time Warner Center, as well as its rental properties, including One Union Square South, Tribeca Park and the Monterey. In addition to the one-of-a kind works featured in 1214 Fifth Ave., Related also commissioned works in 2007 for the lobby of the Caledonia, on West 17th Street and 11th Ave. by the High Line, including a series of abstract canvases, a sculpture, and a wall art installation.
1214 Fifth Ave. opened in the summer of 2012 and is currently 50 percent leased. The property offers a variety of units, ranging from alcove studios to three bedrooms, with prices starting at $2,995. It also includes five two- and three-bedroom penthouses starting at $8,995.
