Long Island City Community Breaks Ground

JMH Development and Mettle Property Group are building the 143-unit property.

JMH Development and Mettle Property Group have broken ground on 36-20 Steinway St., a 143-unit rental community in the Long Island City neighborhood of Queens, New York City. The development team secured a $56 million construction loan from Scale Lending in May.

Leasing on the six-story project is tentatively expected to kick off in spring 2021. The completed, 158,000-square-foot project will offer a mix of studio, one- and two-bedroom units in addition to 18,000 square feet of retail space at the base.

“36-20 Steinway Street sits at the intersection of Astoria and Long Island City—two of the most sought-after neighborhoods in Queens,” commented Jason Halpern, principal of JMH, to Multi-Housing News. “We are excited about delivering a building that will be attractive to the young professionals, students and new families that continue to show great interest in living, working and playing in this thriving community.” 

Designed by architecture firm SLCE, with interiors by Lauren Jayne Design, the project will also feature an on-site parking garage and an amenity package including a 24-hour attended lobby, fitness center, resident lounge and shared outdoor spaces. The property will be exclusively marketed by Citi Habitats’ David Maundrell, while RIPCO’s Geoff Bailey will handle marketing of the retail portion.
