Learning Thermostat Cuts Energy Bills
The smart device from Google learns what the resident likes and adjusts temperatures accordingly.
Google has released the third generation Nest Learning Thermostat, a smart home device that builds a schedule around the temperature preferences of the user. The ENERGY STAR certified product can cut down on heating and cooling bills by automatically adjusting temperatures as the seasons change and the resident comes and goes.
The device, which has a rounded design like a traditional thermostat, can be installed in 30 minutes or less and programs itself during the first week of use. Thereafter, it controls indoor climate based on what the resident likes, for example, warming up to 70 degrees after the resident gets out of bed.
The thermostat can also use sensors and the location of the resident’s phone to determine that she has left home, then set itself to an energy-saving Eco Temperature. Measuring 3.3 inches in diameter, the WiFi-connected device can also be controlled from afar via the user’s phone. Optional sensors can be placed in different rooms for more exact climate control.
