Landmark Properties Breaks Ground on 11 Student Housing Projects

The Athens-based student housing developer will add more than 7,700 beds to its development pipeline that already had 10 new properties under construction.

Landmark Properties has begun construction on 11 student housing developments with more than 7,700 beds in nine states across the United States as part of its busy development pipeline.

“We’re breaking ground on more projects in 2018 than in any other year in our company’s 14-year history,” Wes Rogers, Landmark’s president & CEO, said in a prepared statement. “The size and quality of our development pipeline are testaments to our team’s hard work and vision. We’re excited to continue to see strong demand for our student housing developments across the nation, and we look forward to welcoming more residents to their new homes in the coming years.”

The 11 new properties, part of more than $2 billion in assets under construction for the Athens, Ga.-based student housing developer, are a combination of urban infill and cottage-style projects. Two each will be built in North Carolina and Texas, with the remaining nine assets set for California, Colorado, Georgia, Florida, Illinois, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Some of the 11 properties will deliver in 2019 with the remaining assets set for completion in 2020 and 2021.

These starts join 10 other developments under construction, including three in Florida, two each in Arizona and Texas as well as Pennsylvania, Georgia and Virginia that will deliver between 2018 and 2019. Landmark currently owns and manages 64 student housing projects across the U.S., totaling more than 24,500 beds.

In December, Landmark and CityLife Development Partners finalized a 1.1-acre land purchase for a 28-story mixed-use student housing development in Atlanta’s Midtown neighborhood near Georgia Tech. The Mark at Atlanta will have more than 780 beds, 281 apartments and more than 7,750 square feet of commercial space and 23,500 square feet of amenities when it is completed in August 2020.

The Mark at Atlanta is one of the 11 new projects highlighted by Landmark. The 10 additional project starts are:

  • The Standard at Raleigh: The mixed-use development with 5,965 square feet of retail space is located 0.1 miles from North Carolina State’s Raleigh, N.C., campus. It will have 234 units totaling 707 beds and more than 7,000 square feet of amenity space.
  • The Station at Raleigh: The cottage-style community adjacent to North Carolina State’s Biomedical Campus will have 174 homes and 658 beds and 10,500 square feet of amenity space.
  • The Standard at New Brunswick: The mixed-use development located 0.4 miles from the Rutgers University campus in New Brunswick, N.J., will have186 units totaling 682 beds, 2,100 square feet of retail space and more than 10,700 of amenity space.
  • The Standard at Fort Collins: The urban infill project will be adjacent to Colorado State’s Fort Collins, Colo., campus and will have 237 apartments with 782 beds. Community amenities will include clubhouse, pool, fitness center, golf simulator and yoga studio.
  • The Standard at Austin: The urban infill project is three blocks from the University of Texas’ main west campus in Austin, Texas. It will have 287 apartments and 997 beds along with 5,400 square feet of retail space and more than 33,000 square feet of amenity space.
  • The Retreat at Urbana: The cottage-style community is 0.2 miles from the University of Illinois main campus in Urbana, Ill., and will have 126 homes with 476 beds and 10,260 square feet of shared amenity space.
  • The Retreat at Denton: The cottage-style community near the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas, will have 189 homes totaling 700 beds and 11,000 square feet of amenity space.
  • The Standard at State College: The mixed-use development adjacent to the southwestern corner of Penn State University’s campus in State College, Penn., will have the highest bed count of Landmark’s 2018 project starts with 243 apartments totaling 1,007 beds. It will have nearly 19,000 square feet of amenity space and 30,000 square feet of retail and office space.
  • The Standard at Berkeley: The mixed-use development is adjacent to the University of California’s Berkeley campus and will feature more than 8,600 square feet of commercial retail space. It will have nearly 110,000 square feet of residential space with 117 units and 410 beds and amenities including a fitness center, pool, study lounge and gaming area.
  • The Mark at Gainesville: The urban infill development two blocks from the University of Florida’s campus in Gainesville, Fla., will have 140 apartments totaling 485 beds and nearly 20,000 square feet of shared amenity space.
