Indianapolis—HUD has awarded the AHEPA 232 Apartments in Indianapolis a $2.38 million grant under its Assisted Living Conversion Program. The funding will be used to covert 24 of AHEPA 232’s 74 units into service-enriched seniors housing.

Under the terms of the program, service-enriched housing means that the residences will be redesigned to accommodate frail elderly persons or elderly persons with service needs who are aging in place. Residents are able to live independently but need assistance with activities of daily living comparable to services typically provided in a licensed assisted living facility, such as healthcare-related services. These supportive services must be available through a licensed or certified third-party service provider.

AHEPA 232 Apartments is at 7355 Shadeland Station Way. The property opened in 1985 as a Section 202 affordable seniors property, and is currently managed by AHEPA Management Co., an affiliate of AHEPA National Housing Corp., which will oversee the new services. Completion of the modified units will be in 2015.

The nonprofit AHEPA National Housing Corp. develops HUD-subsidized Section 202 housing for low-income disabled and elderly ages 62 and up. Established in 1983, the company is headquartered in Fishers, Ind., and counts more than 4,800 senior citizens as residents.

AHEPA 232 Apartments is only one of six properties nationwide thus far to receive a grant under the program. Also in Indiana, the LaVerna Terrace Housing Corp. in the town of Avilla received $3 million to do upgrades to its property at 571 N. Main St. Other properties receiving grants are in Connecticut, Maryland, Maine, Minnesota and Ohio.
