Alexandria, Va.—A brewhouse inspired by a legendary pre-Prohibition pub, gone now for a century, will be part of the brand new Modera Tempo mixed-use community in Alexandria, Va. A crucial piece of the City of Alexandria’s Landmark/Van Dorn Small Area Plan revitalization effort, Modera Tempo offers studio, one- and two-bedroom apartment homes, as well as lifestyle-enhancing amenities ranging from a yoga studio and social kitchen to bike storage.

The brewpub, called Portner Brewhouse, will open this coming June, exactly 100 years after a predecessor brewpub called the Robert Portner Brewing Company was shuttered by Prohibition. The Robert Portner Brewing Company had been headquartered in Old Town Alexandria from 1869 until the implementation of Prohibition in 1916. Portner Brewhouse is being resurrected by two of the great-great granddaughters of Robert Portner.

“Portner Brewhouse will undoubtedly add buzz to the area,” Mill Creek Residential vice president of development Amirali Nasserian told MHN. “In addition to adding aesthetic value to the community as the front-facing retailer, we believe the brewpub will create further vibrancy as residents and non-residents alike stop in to enjoy everything it has to offer.

“Popular entertainment and dining destinations, like Portner Brewhouse, add another layer of appeal to Modera Tempo and attract prospective residents to the property in ways that other marketing venues can’t. What’s more, the addition of Portner Brewhouse precisely fits what the city of Alexandria is seeking with Landmark/Van Dorn Small Area Plan, which is designed to transform the submarket into a true live-work-play environment.”
Portner Brewhouse is by no means the only establishment coming to Modera Tempo. “We are focused on attracting dining and retail establishments that add significant value to the neighborhood and our community,” Nasserian said. “We’re pleased that Starbucks and Smashburger have already moved in to the Modera Tempo ground floor and Jimmy John’s will join later this year.”

Modera Tempo provides residents and visitors with a pedestrian- and transit-friendly setting. The development is located within minutes of the Van Dorn Metro Station, offering rapid and convenient access to D.C. employment hubs.

“We are excited that Portner Brewhouse has found a home at Modera Tempo,” president and co-founder Catherine Portner said. “We look forward to sharing Alexandria’s rich brewing history and future with the community exactly a century after the Robert Portner Brewing Company closed.”

Residents of Modera Tempo are certain to have a number of options to slake their hunger and thirst. But their other needs won’t be ignored.

“In addition to our focus on signing some popular dining and entertainment brands, we’re focused on incorporating some convenience service outlets, such as dentists, dry cleaners and nail salons,” Nasserian said. “These types of services add significant value to residents and the neighborhood.”
