Fort Carson Excels in Military Housing
Fort Carson was recently awarded the 2011 Multifamily Executive Merit Award for Military Project of the Year, an award that highlights innovation in architecture.
Colorado Springs, Colo.—Military housing, though important, often lacks appeal. However, this is not the case for Fort Carson. In fact, the community was recently awarded the 2011 Multifamily Executive Merit Award for Military Project of the Year, an award that highlights innovation in architecture.
Fort Carson, developed by Balfour Beatty Communities LLC, a subsidiary of Balfour Beatty Capital Group Inc., includes three neighborhoods totaling 404 homes for soldiers and their families. “Active duty or activated reserve families stationed within 60 miles of Fort Carson are eligible for housing,” Bob Mooney, project director for Balfour Beatty Communities, tells MHN. “The housing is designated for married couples, single-parent soldiers and military families.”
Though the housing mostly consists of residents who were in the Army, according to Mooney there are also Air Force, Navy and Marines stationed in the area.
The family housing includes fourplexes and duplexes that meet the Uniform Federal Accessibility Standards. The homes are built in an “arts and crafts style,” which is an architectural movement to revive handicrafts of newly built homes. “It is inspired by a pre-industrial, handmade society where custom furnishings are common, and the movement was also the inspiration behind the Craftsman and bungalow styles,” Mooney says.
Amenities include HVAC systems, modern kitchens and energy-efficient appliances.
“These homes represent a consistent and determined effort to provide a comfortable and stylish home for our military families,” Mooney says. “Through improved and emerging technology and lessons learned, Balfour Beatty Communities continually looks to improve our offering of homes that match the lifestyle of our residents.”
