Flower Branch to Rebuild DC-Area Apartments Lost in Explosion
The company will break ground on two buildings totaling 27 units, replacing two structures that were destroyed by a deadly fire in August 2016.

Flower Branch Apartments has announced the forthcoming groundbreaking of two residential buildings on the northern outskirts of Washington, D.C. The structures will rise on the location of two former buildings which, according to Patch.com, were damaged in an explosion on Aug. 10, 2016, that killed seven residents, two of them children, and displaced about 100 people.Â
The development will be located at 8701 and 8703 Arliss St., in the Long Branch neighborhood, which is located in the southern part of the unincorporated community of Silver Springs. Situated near the junction of roads 320 and 193, downtown D.C. is a 23-minute drive away, while the Silver Spring Station is roughly two miles east of the community.
Totaling 27 units, the property will encompass six one-bedroom, 16 two-bedroom and five three-bedroom apartments. Construction work is set to begin by the end of the month. Kay Apartment Communities will manage the community. Pre-leasing is planned for February 2019, with completion slated for spring 2019.
“We are pleased that we can rebuild and make these much-needed rental homes available,” said Clark Melillo, president of Kay Apartment Communities, in prepared remarks.
