You’ve got to be in it to win it. This pragmatic New York State lottery slogan was retired years ago, but it continues to stick in my mind—and I’m sure it energized countless New Yorkers up off the couch and out the door to buy their lottery tickets. Luckily the selection process for becoming an MHN Excellence Award winner is less arbitrary, but it’s also much more time-consuming. Therefore we owe a big thank you not only to our panel of judges, but also to the many fine companies that took the time to enter the competition; and we hope to see your entries again next year. In the meantime, we encourage you to strengthen your relationship with the magazine by reaching out to any member of the MHN editorial team whenever you have an interesting case study or insight to share with your industry colleagues. And join us in welcoming News Editor Jessica Fiur who took over the MHN Online Daily duties last month when Joshua Pringle transitioned out of the position to attend graduate school. You can reach Jessica at [email protected].

Jessica came on board just in time for a new September tradition: the MHN Excellence Awards Cocktail Party in New York City that was held this year on September 19. While we’ve heard that some of you aren’t crazy about sitting through long gala awards events, it became evident through industry feedback that most Excellence award winners in past years have missed having an event where they can celebrate their achievements with colleagues and clients. Based on the high turn-out, it’s safe to say that New York was a good choice for our awards/cocktail party—and the venue (Ohm in West Chelsea) was 100 percent “multi-housing.” We kicked off the evening in the Andi Pepper-designed resident lounge. Douglaston Development President Steven Charno shared insights about the architecture, operations and marketing of this fully leased rental property. Next, we announced the 2011 Excellence Award winners who had their pictures snapped by MHN Associate Editor Mike Ratliff. (Visit www.multi-housingnews.com to see all of Mike’s coverage of the event and don’t forget to check out our Facebook page.) With this important business behind us, the party moved to the terrace for some power networking, cocktails and hors d’ouvres. Thank you to party sponsors Benoit & Associates, Douglaston Development, Ohm and Property Shark for their support of this event. And congratulations to all the winners. We hope to see you—and your competition entries—next year. And don’t forget: you have to be in it to win it.
