If you haven’t been to Manhattan recently, the first thing you’ll notice during your taxi ride from the airport is a lot more bicyclists on the road. In May New York City launched Citi Bike, the country’s largest bike share program, which is being sponsored by Citibank and MasterCard. It has opened up a whole new transportation option to residents and visitors who can now access a fleet of 6,000 bicycles available at more than 300 stations in Manhattan below 59th Street and parts of Brooklyn (the program will eventually expand into Queens, the Upper East and West Sides of Manhattan, and additional parts of Brooklyn).

Each station has a touchscreen kiosk, a map of the service area and surrounding neighborhood, and a docking system that releases bikes for rental with a credit card or key. The naysayers said this wouldn’t catch on in New York, but Citi Bike is proving to be surprisingly popular—just as Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg predicted. He’s added more than 350 miles of bike lanes in recent years as part of his investment in cycling and the vision for a greener New York City with a reduced carbon footprint. Come see for yourself. Register for our party, and don’t forget to pack your bike helmet!
