On a day like today, it would sure be nice to curl up next to a fireplace with a warm drink after work. The community fireplace, both indoors and out, is a tried and true crowd pleaser when it comes to amenities. And with much of the South getting their fair share of ice and snow this winter, the cozy feature shouldn’t be limited to colder climates.

Fireplaces work great as a focal point in a community room thanks to improvements in both technology and design. Clean, linear lines with less metal and more glass are becoming more popular. A glass gas fireplace within a divider wall can break up a large room into the smaller social spaces that residents demand, while still providing heat and visuals on both sides.

Another idea worth considering is placing a fireplace higher on the wall, similar to how you might mount a flat screen television. Unless there is a big game on, your residents are more interested in using common areas to socialize than to watch TV. Smaller vent-free fireplaces are also an option if you really want to spoil your residents. A small, vertical oriented fireplace like Torch from Napoleon Fireplaces will bring a bathroom to another level of luxury.

Napoleon also has you covered for outdoor amenity spaces. While wood fire pits have grown in popularity (especially in student housing), there is nothing like a hassle-free gas or electric fireplace that turns on with the flick of a switch.
