Brookfield Multiplex Tops Out $365M University of Sydney Research Facility
Brookfield Multiplex, the leading global contractor with completed works worth over AUD$51 billion, has announced topping out University of Sydney’s newest structure at its expanding New South Wales campus.

Sydney, Australia—Brookfield Multiplex, the leading global contractor with completed works worth over AUD$51 billion, has announced topping out University of Sydney’s newest structure at its expanding New South Wales campus.
The AUD$385 million building is located at the University of Sydney’s Camperdown Campus in New South Wales and is part of the Charles Perkins Center, a cutting edge education and research facility, currently being developed by University of Sydney. It will support and advance interdisciplinary research on obesity, cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, Australia’s leading cause of illness and fatality. The just 502,000-square-foot building will be able to receive 950 researchers and 1,455 undergraduates once it completes. It will house four seminar rooms capable of seating 20, two wet teaching labs one with a 240 person seating capacity and one for 12, five 60-seat dry labs, as well as a 360-person auditorium. Labs and seminar rooms feature outlays that allow them to be joined together into larger spaces. The new center also includes student commons featuring open-plan spaces connected to the main café and student atrium. Clinical research facilities, a biobank, wet and dry laboratories, high-tech imaging and flow cytometry facilities such as live cell imaging will round out the state-of-the-art research nexus.
Located on the college campus’ northwestern edge, the new research and education hub will create a new focal point for student, academics and researchers alike. Its location puts the Perkins Center in close proximity to the faculties of Medicine, Science and Veterinary Science as well as the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital creating a leading pandisciplinary hub of biomedical sciences, bioinformatics, computational biology as well as behavioral science and clinical research.
“Construction is on target for completion prior to the beginning of the 2014 academic year. We have overcome many challenges over the past 12 months including working within an active and operating University campus with minimum disruption to the daily life of both academics and students,” says David Ghannoum, regional managing director for New South Wales, Brookfield Multiplex. The building broke ground in March 2012, while early work on the entire center started in February 2011.
The project is supported by the Australian federal government through its Education Investment Fund.
Brookfield Multiplex has previously collaborated with the New South Wales higher education institutions. One of its latest success stories is the $54 million University Terraces green student housing project Brookfield built out for the University of New South Wales.
