By Anuradha Kher, Online News EditorChicago–Construction Manager J.F. McCarthy’s new book, Choosing Project Success: A Guide for Building Professionals, was recently named a finalist in the Education/Academic and Business: Real Estate categories of the National Best Books 2008 Awards, sponsored by USA Book News as well as in the Business and Education/Academic categories of the 2008 Next Generation Indie Book Awards. Designed for both novice as well as experienced architects, building owners, project and facility managers, designers, lenders and insurers, Choosing Project Success is a commercial construction manual that addresses both project and construction management along with the technical aspects of the job site. “This is a guide for building owners and managers with guidelines to achieve success,” McCarthy tells MHN. “It is written in layman’s terms and even a non-technical person can understand it.”“By combining both subjects, my book forms an integrated workable managerial approach that can be used by all members of the project team,” says McCarthy. The first section of the book explores how to obtain usable facts that allow for communication, planning and analysis. Section two tackles creating a purpose definition for the project and offers personal organization tips and management tools. Section three provides a managerial understanding of the technical aspects of construction on topics such as soils, materials, concrete, masonry, plumbing and more. “You don’t have to read the book cover-to-cover to get immediate benefits,” says McCarthy. “All subjects are organized by chapter and can be learned in about an hour with no previous knowledge of the subject.” The top three tips to a successful multifamily project, which McCarthy also provides in the book, are:Establish the reason the project is being built. For example, the goals for a public housing project, an apartment complex, student housing project and condo are different from one another. It is crucial to set up the correct delivery system for the project. It is incumbent upon the developer to know about the different components of building in order for him to be successful.A developer must know that enough time is critical to obtain higher quality products.McCarthy has worked as a general contractor in the U.S. for the past 36 years on all kinds of property types from multifamily to retail.
