San Diego—Affirmed Housing Group, a San Diego-based affordable housing developer, announced the grand opening of Solterra, an affordable community for seniors in El Cajon, Calif.

Solterra, which will house residents ages 55 and older, includes 49 apartments, 46 of which are one-bedroom units and three of which are two-bedroom units.

Amenities include on-site management, a computer lounge, gated and covered parking and a community room. Additionally, Solterra will feature commercial space including retail centers.

A unique feature of the community is that Solterra residents will have access to a flex car. This car, a 2013 LEAF is electric and equivalent to 129/102 city/hwy MPG, based on EPA formula of 33.7 kW/hour equal to one gallon of gasoline energy. It can also travel 75 miles before it needs a new charge, and includes a USB connection port for portable devices. The shared car will be available to be reserved by residents.

“The electric car will allow residents to experience a car-free lifestyle, while still enjoying the occasional benefits of a private vehicle,” James Silverwood, president and CEO of Affirmed Housing Group, says. “We believe that this flex car is one of Solterra’s many elements that environmentally aware seniors will appreciate.”
