A Fond Farewell
Editorial Director Diana Mosher thanks the apartment sector for everything it's taught her as she says goodbye to MHN.
It’s hard to believe that I joined Multi-Housing News more than 10 years ago. I still remember the excitement as we shipped my first issue in November 2005. Becoming Editor-in-Chief of the apartment industry’s leading magazine was an energizing professional challenge, and the sector has become more interesting with every passing year. So it was not an easy decision to resign from MHN’s excellent parent company Yardi… but, this is my last issue of the magazine.
My new position will allow me to concentrate on a different passion: producing content for live events. I won’t be focusing on real estate, but perhaps there will be synergies between the new subject matter and my current professional contacts—especially those of you involved in designing, branding and marketing apartment assets. If you’re a “creative,” or lead a team of creatives, let’s connect on LinkedIn. The last time I changed jobs I was still relying on business cards to stay in touch, but now I’m on an ongoing quest for a paperless existence. Similarly, much has changed for the multifamily industry since 2005, and these changes have been fascinating to watch.
Soon after I took the editorial helm, we launched MHN Online Daily, reporting on the latest news and trends shaping the marketplace. Back then our audience accessed MHN digital content on their BlackBerries. Today, mobile technology enables us to deliver the news in a much more visual format and it has completely changed how the multi-faceted multifamily industry approaches everything from leasing and marketing to operations and finance. In 2005, the sector was just starting to talk about LEED. Today, the green building movement is in full swing.
In this month’s cover story (“Passion Projects,” page 15) MHN Contributing Editor Chris Wood examines how apartment residents are finally getting on board with the green initiatives put in place by developers and operators. We also take a look at how student housing is shaping the green development discussion (“Executive Insight: Miles Orth,” page 6). Our Resource Management feature (“Beyond the Drought,” page 24) looks at mandates designed to help conserve water everywhere—but especially in those areas under exceptional or extreme drought designation. We hope you enjoy the issue! I’ve enjoyed my time covering the multifamily industry, and I thank all of you for everything you’ve taught me!
