University of Alabama at Birmingham Opens $73M Residence Hall
The McMahon, a 712-bed community in the housing core of the campus, marks UAB’s first LEED Gold-certified building.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham has celebrated the opening of The McMahon, a $73 million on-campus residence hall. The 712-bed student housing community in Birmingham, Ala., is the first LEED Gold-certified building at UAB.
Located at 1600 10th Ave. S., near Campus Green, the 231,098-square-foot property is bordered by the Ninth and 10th avenues to the north and south, and by the 17th and 16th streets to the east and west.
Amenities at McMahon include study spaces, a storm shelter, multiuse office space and a dining area with a seating capacity for 250 people. The project architect of the residence building is Goodwyn Mills Cawood.
Senior Vice President Bob Gray—who worked on the project—represented the company at the ribbon-cutting ceremony. The event was hosted by UAB President Ray Watts.
Last year in November, Aptitude Development broke ground on another student housing project in Birmingham, Ala. The Marshall Birmingham, a 409-bed, 200,000-square-foot student housing community, is within walking distance of the University of Alabama campus.
