U-Haul Opens Facility Near University of Illinois

U-Haul has opened its newest self storage location in Champaign, Ill. The facility has begun serving its customers since January 16.

Located at 306 E University Ave., the facility’s main building comprises 84,360 square feet across five stories, enclosing 1,125 indoor storage units, out of which 740 are climate-controlled rooms and 385 indoor heated rooms for rent. Units range in size from small, measuring 25 or 50 square feet, to medium at 100 square feet and large at 200 square feet. Amenities include professional hitch instillation and towing accessories, retail showroom, moving supplies, drive-in load/unload bays, as well as access to truck and trailer sharing services.

The Champaign property is less than 1 mile from University of Illinois. U-Haul Co. of Illinois president Kevin Barringer plans to locally employ 15 staff members at the Champaign facility.

As of December, 3,305 self storage properties were in all stages of development nationwide, a recent Yardi Matrix report shows. Out of all, 790 properties were under construction, which represented 3.1 percent of the total stock—reflecting 10-basis-point decrease from the previous month.
