U-Haul is expanding its portfolio in Western markets with the acquisition of a 93,357-square-foot former Kmart store in Vernal, Utah, planning to repurpose it to a 700-climate-controlled-unit self storage facility. The conversion marks the company’s 13th owned and operated property in Utah and its first investment in the area.

Dubbed U-Haul Moving & Storage of Vernal, the facility currently offers access to truck and trailer sharing, moving supplies, portable storage containers and a temporary retail showroom. After the conversion, onsite amenities will include high-tech security features, towing equipment, professional hitch installation, hitch accessories and bike racks.

Located at 1153 W. U.S. Route 40, the 7.3-acre property is in a retail and residential area less than 1.5 miles from the city center. Two other self storage properties, affiliated with U-Haul, are within a 3-mile radius of the upcoming facility.

Currently, U-Haul’s portfolio includes over 75.1 million square feet of space across 876,000 self storage units. In May, the company acquired another former Kmart store in Morton, Ill., planning to convert it by the end of this year.
