Starwood Impact Investors Teams With Obsidian Capital
The platform will continue to invest in minority-owned firms.
Starwood Capital Group has made its first-ever investment through its Starwood Impact Investors investment platform. The company has committed to invest programmatic capital and offer strategic advice to Obsidian Capital Partners. Starwood didn’t disclose the details of the deal.
Obsidian Capital was founded in 2022 by Alan-Michael Hill and Anthony Perry to specialize in multifamily investments across primary and secondary markets in the southern and Midwestern U.S. The co-founders have backgrounds in finance and business operations with major firms like Apollo Global Management, Boston Consulting Group, Goldman Sachs and KKR. According to Obisidan, the firm will specifically focus on Georgia, Kentucky and Texas, and is actively pursuing deals in these markets.
Once Obsidian Capital acquires its low- to medium-risk alternative assets, the firm’s strategy calls for repositioning the communities by enhancing the tenant experience, implementing active asset management and improving operational efficiencies.
Starwood Capital Group launched its Starwood Impact Investors platform in 2023, using capital from the firm’s existing investment vehicles to seek out and fund up-and-coming sponsors. Bakari Adams, managing director at Starwood Capital & head of SII, said in statement that SII will be dedicated to partnering with firms that are at least majority owned by an underrepresented people or group. SII will equally be looking to invest in companies that have an opportunistic mindset and a rigorous investment process.
