Chicago—The Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM®) Foundation, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) public foundation, recently honored James H. Cantrell, CPM®, of San Francisco, CA, with its Lloyd D. Hanford Sr. Distinguished Faculty Award. The Hanford award is presented periodically to a member of the IREM® faculty who has shown extraordinary dedication to the educational process and the advancement of knowledge in the real estate management profession. It commemorates the direct contributions of Lloyd D. Hanford, Sr., one of the Institute’s early presidents and a founder of the IREM® real estate management education program.

An IREM instructor for 30 years, teaching courses throughout the world, Cantrell is president of Cantrell, Harris & Associates, a San Francisco-based real estate consulting firm. The firm provides consulting and hands-on management of all types of real estate assets for institutional and private investors throughout California.  With more than 35 years of asset and property management experience across a variety of property types, Cantrell specializes in the turnaround of properties with deferred maintenance and a history of mismanagement.

Prior to joining Cantrell Harris 25 years ago, Cantrell was affiliated with Arlen Realty, Clevetrust Realty Investors, and Regency Equities.  As well, he was president of Plaza Equities Management, Inc. managing a national portfolio of approximately $275 million of mixed assets.

Cantrell has long been active in IREM at the local and national levels.  He has served as president of IREM’s San Francisco Bay Area Chapter No. 21, and was honored with two chapter awards in recognition of his contribution to professional education. Nationally, he has been an IREM® Regional Vice President and has served as chair of several committees.  In addition, Cantrell has been a featured speaker on major industry speech platforms; a contributing author to the John Wiley Handbook of Real Estate; and an Associate Professor and faculty member of Golden Gate University, teaching courses in the Masters Program on property and asset management.  As well, he was appointed in 2009 by then-Mayor Gavin Newsom to the City of San Francisco’s “Existing Building Efficiency Initiative Task Force.”

Cantrell is a court appointed receiver for properties in San Francisco, Alameda, San Mateo, Los Angeles, San Joaquin and Sonoma Counties.  He holds a Bachelors’ Degree in Business Administration from the University of Miami and is a licensed Real Estate Broker in California.
