Presidio Landmark Apartments Honored by National Trust
A 154-unit adaptive reuse project by Presidio Trust and Forest City has received The National Trust/Advisory Council on Historic Preservation's Award for Federal Partnerships in Historic Preservation. The conversion was designed by Perkins+Will.

San Francisco—The National Trust/Advisory Council on Historic Preservation Award for Federal Partnerships in Historic Preservation has been given this year to the Presidio Public Health Service District. The award, which is the 12th annual one, honors the conversion of the former Public Health Service Hospital at the Presidio of San Francisco into the 154-unit Presidio Landmark apartments.
This project was developed through a public-private partnership between the Presidio Trust and Forest City Enterprises with Perkins+Will, the architecture firm that designed the conversion. The goal was to create a new sustainable property while enhancing the historically significant character of the national park (The Presidio of San Francisco).
The $71 million, 220,000-square-foot project, which was completed in 2010, included removing two non-historic wings that were part of a 1950s addition to the former 480-bed hospital, which was originally completed in 1932. The architects met federal historic preservation standards by reusing many of the original materials, including interior doors, restored marble wainscoting in the lobby and stairwells, and the original brick exterior. The renovations enabled the building to achieve LEED Gold certification.
The National Trust/Advisory Council on Historic Preservation Award isn’t the first recognition of the redevelopment. Previously, the project won a California Preservation Foundation 2011 Preservation Design Award, an AIA San Francisco 2011 Honor Award for Historic Preservation and Innovation in Rehabilitation, the 2011 Governor’s Historic Preservation Award, and the 2011 Gold Reconstruction Award from Building Design & Construction Magazine.
The Presidio of San Francisco, long a military installation, has been a part of the National Park Service since 1994, with many of its structures being renovated since then, including the Presidio Landmark apartments. The Presidio of San Francisco is the only national recreation area with a large number of residential properties.
