NCCU Breaks Ground on 2 Student Housing Communities
Scheduled for completion in 2021, the properties will feature 1,247 beds. An additional residential hall, Lawson Street Residential Hall, is projected for completion in 2021.

North Carolina Central University (NCCU) has broken ground on two residence halls, Chidley South and George Street, with additional plans to open a $47 million student center totaling 100,230 square feet near downtown Durham, N.C. Duda | Paine Architects, O’Brien Atkins Associates and MHTN Architects designed the student center.
Scheduled for completion in 2021, the student center will replace the existing Alfonso Elder Student Union, a 51-year-old property located at the corner of Nelson and Fayatteville Streets. The new center will serve as a student services headquarters and will include amenities such as:
- meeting rooms
- commuter lounge
- 1,000-seat banquet hall
- 1,750-seat auditorium
- retail food items
- computer stations
The two student housing communities will consist of 1,247 beds in semi-suite and apartment-style units. Chidley South and George Street are scheduled to be completed in 2020. Lawson Street Residential—an additional residential hall—is expected to be completed in 2021. The vacant Chidley Hall at NCCU is being demolished to make way for the new development.
NCCU broke ground on the residence halls in June. The company has other projects planned including a new school of business expected to break ground in 2020.
