Nadel Architects-Designed Community Opens in Marina del Rey

Marina del Rey, Calif.—The Shores multifamily community has opened its doors in the unincorporated Los Angeles area community of Marina del Rey, bringing 544 new units to the submarket.

The $165 million community was developed by Jerry Epstein, actor Kirk Douglas and Herb Nadel, founding principal of Nadel Architects, which led the design of the new community.  Shores replaced a series of two-story, garden-style apartments that were developed by Epstein and Douglas in the 1960s, and is meant to fulfill the demand for high-density contemporary apartments that has been driven in large part by the influx of employees working in the booming Silicon Beach area.

“Our design drew from the nautical motif in the original 1960s development, and highlights the projects close proximity to the marina and Los Angeles,” says Dale Yonkin, project director with Nadel Architects. “Sail-like elements, and a dramatic color scheme based on semaphore flags, result in a design that maintains timeless concepts while blending with a more modern, California coastal theme.”

The new community features 12 interconnected buildings that stand at five stories and are comprised of an assortment of one- and two-bedroom floor plans that range in size from 750 to 1,410 square feet. Residences include spacious living spaces with views of the Pacific Ocean, marina and courtyard from almost every apartment, as well as granite countertops, two-tone cabinetry with stainless steel hardware, Energy Star appliances, and a washer and dryer in each unit.

The community amenities are designed for the year-round outdoor weather that Southern California is known for and includes a 2-acre park-like courtyard with lush landscaping that features fire pits, barbecue areas, a bocce court, pool and two spas.
