Multiplex Completes Senior Care Facility in Sydney
The Brookfield affiliate faced numerous construction challenges, including the development's location on the side of a steeply sloping hill and the need to preserve and protect six heritage trees.

Multiplex, the global construction company owned by Brookfield, has completed The Terraces, a new $180 million over-55 community developed by Presbyterian Aged Care at the site of the former Scottish Hospital in Sydney’s Paddington section.
It is the biggest single project undertaken by PAC in New South Wales, Australia. Designed by Cottee Parker JPR Architects, The Terraces is situated on 3.7 acres on the former hospital site on Brown Street. It includes a 100-bed aged-care residential facility with a 23-bed dementia unit and 70 independent living units spread across four buildings. The Scottish Hospital’s Heritage Building was converted into nine independent living units.

New community facilities include a café, hair and beauty salon, cinema, community and function rooms, swimming pool and gym. Land has also been dedicated to Woollahra Council to expand the public park on the northern boundary of the site known as Dillon St. Reserv
Work began on the site in November 2015. Multiplex noted workers had to manage numerous construction challenges including restricted access to the site from surrounding residential streets and a challenging landscape topography. The complex is built into the side of a steeply sloping hill. Multiplex also consulted with an arborist to retain and protect six heritage trees on the site, including a weeping lilly pilly tree with multiple trunks.
The company staged the construction of The Terraces in phases to enable the existing aged-care facility to remain open until all the residents could be moved into the new part of the development.
Multiplex Regional Managing Director David Ghannoum said the company worked with PAC as their construction delivery partner and a development advisor.
Multiplex Projects
Established in Perth, Australia, in 1962, Multiplex has operations throughout Australia, including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide. Projects span numerous sectors including commercial, health, retail, residential, tourism, leisure, education and stadiums.
In July 2018, Multiplex finished work on Karratha Health Campus, a $153.6 million hospital in the Pilbara section of Western Australia. The hospital replaced the aging Nickol Bay Hospital, more than doubling the size of the original property, with a 40-bed facility. It added new emergency department bays, a surgical center, maternity wing and delivery suites and expanded outpatient facilities.
In May 2018, Multiplex completed the $225 million, 314,500-square-foot Learning and Teaching Building at Monash University’s campus in Clayton, a suburb of Moulton. The four-story building has a regional transport interchange that serves thousands of daily visitors to the campus.
