KTGY-Designed Student Housing Opens at WesternU

Architecture and planning firm KTGY Group and student housing developer Hanover Pacific have announced the unveiling of the Daumier at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, Calif.

Irvine, Calif.—Architecture and planning firm KTGY Group Inc. and student housing developer Hanover Pacific LLC have announced the unveiling of the Daumier at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, Calif. The community is designed to achieve LEED for Homes Silver certification or higher.

The Daumier is located on 3.6 acres adjacent to the WesternU campus, a private, non-profit graduate school for the health professions. The $45 million, 173,000-square-foot, four-story mixed-use student housing community features 305 beds and 10,000 square feet of academic space for WesternU.

The Daumier is the result of a public/private partnership with the City of Pomona, the Vehicle Parking District, Hanover Pacific and Provident Resources Group, along with the support of WesternU.

“KTGY used influences from the downtown and the university to create a project that embodies the mid-century architecture throughout the downtown while blending with the campus’ movement towards modern aesthetics,” David Senden, a principal with Irvine-based KTGY Group, and the project’s lead designer, tells MHN.

“The grounds around the Daumier incorporated elements of an architecturally significant outdoor mall, which forms the backbone of downtown Pomona, resulting in a project that is unique but exists in harmony with the various architectural elements throughout downtown Pomona. The Daumier will serve as the model for mixed-use development in the City of Pomona.”

The Daumier’s 202 units include a combination of single- and double-occupancy apartment units, with most of the units being two-bedroom, two-bath apartments situated in a single building with controlled access. Student amenities include a fitness center, community pool, study rooms, yoga studio, business center, complimentary coffee bar and valet services.

“The Daumier was a highly anticipated project for the community and the University,” says Robert Y. Kim, executive managing director of Irvine-based Hanover Pacific. “The project represents how cities and higher education can work together to promote economic revitalization. Furthermore, the university can now meet student demand for high-quality housing near campus.”

Adds Debra Lockwood, Provident Resources Group executive vice president and chief financial officer: “Provident’s committed to supporting the mission of the University, and is excited to provide a live-and-learn community for WesternU students.”

The university chose to name the project for the 19th century French artist Honoré Daumier, whose lithograph of a doctor and a patient was influential to the philosophy of WesternU, Kim says.

The Daumier was financed with tax-exempt bonds. Provident Resources Group, a national not-for-profit 501(c)(3) with more than $1 billion in assets under ownership, is the owner and operator of the Daumier.

KTGY achieved the efficiencies required while at the same time creating a beautiful building that integrates well with the campus and the downtown, Kim says, adding it “possibly helps set the design standard for future development on campus and the downtown.”
