Chicago—A community service project undertaken jointly by the Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM®) and its Louisiana Chapter No. 55—benefitting St. Michael Special School in New Orleans—recently was honored by the Brees’ Dream Foundation, a charity established by New Orleans’ Saints football player Drew Brees and his wife to fund cancer research, give educational opportunities to children, and to help New Orleans. In addition to the recognition, St. Michael Special School was awarded $2,000 in prize money by the Foundation at a special ceremony attended by Debbie Prejeant, CPM®, IREM® Louisiana’s 2012 Chapter President.
According to Prejeant, St. Michael was one of several very worthwhile local organizations that were considered for the community service project, undertaken last October, in conjunction with IREM’s 2012 Fall Leadership Conference in New Orleans.
More than 50 IREM® Members from across the U.S. and Canada participated in the project, undertaking activities including fall landscaping (planting trees, shrubs, and flowers); painting the activity room in the Joy Center, a facility for young adults; and using participants’ professional expertise to inspect campus buildings and identify needed repairs and improvements that are needed. A specific focus of the inspection addressed what can be done to save a much-beloved, historic building on the property in need of renovations.
