Savvy U.S-based sponsors are building a footprint far from American shores.

While market volatility is calling some U.S. cities into question as multifamily investment targets, plenty of opportunities exist today for deals and development overseas. Strong sponsors with international expertise are teaming up with local partners to build a presence far from American shores.

Hines, for instance, has developed residential condominiums in countries such as Brazil, China, Germany, Italy, Poland and Spain. “Our current focus on purpose-built rental opportunities will take us to any country that is showing strong market fundamentals,” noted Lisa Newton, the firm’s vice president of multifamily operations. She reports that Hines is working on developments in Ireland and Germany, “with both countries experiencing strong demand for professionally managed rentals.”
