Dominium Founder Dies at the Age of 70

Minneapolis—Dominium, an apartment owner, developer and manager, today is sad to announce that its founder, David Brierton passed away on September 27 at the age of 70 after losing his battle with cancer. Brierton was a successful businessman and dedicated family man and he will be missed by all who knew him.

Brierton was born in 1942 and grew up in Waukesha, Wis. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he spent more than three years. Following his term in the military, he attended the University of Wisconsin where he received his undergraduate degree and then his masters of business administration (MBA) from the Graduate School of Business at the University of Wisconsin.

In 1972, Brierton founded Dominium and was joined immediately thereafter by Jack Safar. In the mid-1980s Dominium expanded its business into market-rate housing; and in the 1990s the company began focusing on developing or acquiring assets using low income housing tax credits. Today, Dominium is the largest multifamily apartment owner in the state of Minnesota and the eighth largest affordable housing owner in the nation, with more than 23,000 owned or managed units in 20 states. Dominium is celebrating its 40th anniversary in October of this year.

Brierton helped numerous individuals and families in financial need. He was instrumental in developing a thriving organization that has assisted more than 70,000 low-to-moderate income people secure affordable housing.

Brierton was passionate about affordable housing and served on the boards of the National Leased Housing Association and Minnesota Multi-Housing Association.
