Dominium Breaks Ground on Arizona Affordable Communities
The adjacent properties will offer housing for seniors and families.
Dominium has commenced construction on 605 units of affordable housing for families and seniors in Glendale, Ariz. Two apartment communities, Juniper Square and 67 Flats, are being constructed on adjacent parcels. The properties are intended for those earning no more than 60 percent of AMI, affordability to be maintained through at least 2053.
Juniper Square will be the first to open in the spring of 2026, followed by 67 Flats that summer. The projects’ total cost will be $250 million.
Juniper Square will be an age-restricted senior community featuring 221 one-, two and three-bedroom apartments. The 287,458-square-foot property will offer common-area amenities, including a central courtyard with ramada and fire pits.
Meanwhile, 67 Flats, which is designed for families. Its 384 apartments will be offered in one-, two- and three-bedroom layouts, with the two-bedroom floor plans predominating. Common-area amenities at the 875,141-square-foot development are set to include a courtyard with ramadas and ample seating near the pool.
“The site plan approval for both properties was handled concurrently with the city as one zoned parcel,” Sarah Shambrook, Dominium government relations manager, told Multi-Housing News. “The zoning and site plan approval required a public process which brought some NIMBY-ism and general opposition to affordable housing. However, thanks to the City of Glendale staff being willing to work through comments and questions with Dominium and the Glendale City Council showing great leadership, the communities were ultimately approved by council.”
First Glendale property
Each community’s apartments are expected to include ceiling fans, walk-in closets, coat closets, central air-conditioning and private balconies or patios. The properties mark Dominium’s initial development in Glendale. W.D. Construction, a joint venture of Weis Builders and Dominium Construction and Architectural Services, will construct the properties.
